Art with Purpose Exhibit
Opens Friday, Feb. 5 from 5-8 pm
Evendale Cultural Arts Center
A unique art show opens at the Evendale Cultural Arts Center beginning with an opening reception on Friday, February 3 from 5-8 pm. Local artists and art center instructors, Darla Kirchner and Pattie Byron are presenting Art with Purpose, a show which focuses on a different aspect of art, that which educates and enlightens.
We will host an opening reception on Friday, February 3 from 5-8 pm. Viewing times are 5-8 pm on Friday, February 3, noon-5 pm on Saturday, February 4 and 1-4 pm on Sunday, February 5. There will be hands on ART to participate in on Saturday and a presentation on “Quilts, Community, Friendship & Art” on Sunday starting at 2 pm.
As a starting point, the artists used quilting. After much research, they each found inspiration in past and present quilts created by women. Darla focused on the symbolism, resourcefulness and patterns and said, “Whether the quilt was created for practical warmth or gift, I found the history and meaning behind the community of quilters vast and empowering.” Darla continued, “My research went back to the women in my family where I found simple beauty and the reuse of fabric that made exquisite, useful art. The use of layers, hidden and subtle symbolic meaning, abundant colors, patterns and sizes is worked into my own pieces.”
Pattie found her inspiration in the shapes, journey and community of quilting. “The three ideas that moved me were first, the creativity achieved in the restraints of a simple shape; in my art, I interrupt the quilt square using the restraints of 12"x12" to 4"x4" inch squares. The second theme I found interesting was the journey of women who quilt; it was physical like pioneer women who traveled west to new frontiers or women of the Underground Railroad who guided those that traveled with their quilts. Other times it was a journey of change like the quilts that spoke of prohibition and I use the concept of journey throughout my work. Lastly, I admired the community and friendship that was created around quilting.”
Art with Purpose also includes a joint "quilt" that the artists worked on together. This quilt is not created from traditional quilting materials; each artist used materials familiar only to them. At this show, they wanted to introduce an interactive piece and invite people to the gallery to help create a quilt using untraditional materials.
The Evendale Cultural Arts Center is located at 10500 Reading Rd. in Evendale, Ohio. The center is located in the restored Civic Center.
