Call Forwarding Scam
Several residents have reported to us that they have received phone calls from an unknown person identifying themselves as some type of law enforcement officer directing them to make an emergency contact at a specific number. The caller instructs the person to dial *72 before the area code and number. This is a scam, a fraud offense. *72 is generally a feature on your phone that allows you to forward your calls to another number. If you make this 11 digit call, you will be allowing unknown third parties to use your phone to accept collect and third party calls, with the charges being placed on your phone bill. Obviously, you don't want to do that! Just hang up and instruct all the parties in your house to do the same. In as much as these are generally out of state calls and are likely coming from jails or prisons, prosecution will be
extremely difficult!
