PLAYHOUSE IN THE PARK coming to EVENDALE with a special performances for children and young people.
New Kid by Dennis Foon
Performed in the Evendale Recreation Center 10500 Reading Road
Saturday, October 10, 2009 @ 3:00 p.m.
A modern classic about the immigrant experience, this play was first devised in Canada in the 80's from the real-life stories of children settling in Vancouver. Now adapted for our own increasingly diverse community here in the Greater Cincinnati area, NEW KID tells the story of a boy named Nick who comes from a country known as "Homeland." The playwright puts the audience into Nick's shoes by having the American kids speak in gibberish and forcing us to learn a strange language and customs along with Nick. Told with humor and bold movement, this unforgetable play challenges everyone to question bullying and prejudice and to emphathize with newcomers to our community and to welcome the new perspectives they bring.
Dennis Foon, labeled as "unquestionably Canada's best young people's playwright" by the Children's Literature Journal, was artistic director of Vancouver's acclaimed Green Thumb Theatre for 12 years, where he created a body of plays that continue to be produced internationally in numerous languages. He has received the British Theatre Award, two Chalmers awards, the Jesse Richardson Career Achievement Award and the International Arts for Young Audiences Award, and in 2007, was made a lifetime member of the Playwrights Guild of Canada for his outstanding contribution to Canadian playwriting and theater.
