We have some
great news for Evendale.
The Ohio Parks and Recreation Association (OPRA) honors one individual a year as the Youth Sports Coach of the Year. The 2007 recipient is an Evendale resident, Doug Nunn. Doug will be honored at Youth Sports Day at the Statehouse on June 27th from 11 – 2 p.m. There is a luncheon, awards ceremony and kids from all over the state attend and participate in sport activities on the statehouse lawn.
Here is an excerpt from his nomination form:
As written by a Kristen Maiden & Marty Lohmeier, a parent from his team:
Doug Nunn has been coaching for approximately 18 years. Doug has 6 children ranging in age from 5 - 23, two girls and four boys. He was the head coach for both his girls' teams this past season. One team went undefeated and the other only won one game. His attitude and enthusiasm were the same for both teams. The girls on both teams had a fun season and learned about basketball.
I think Doug taught the girls that being the best doesn't mean winning big and bragging; it also means being a GOOD winner. I think this is such an important lesson for kids to learn at such a young age. There are some adults who still haven't learned this. Our team ended their season 10-0. Throughout the season, Doug kept them grounded. He never let them think that they couldn't be beat. He encouraged them to do their best, play basketball like they knew how and win or lose, they would be okay. Another thing that Doug taught the girls was to believe in themselves. At the beginning of the season, there were only a few girls that stood out. As the season went on it was so neat to see ALL the girls improve and gain confidence. Doug made each player feel that they all contributed to
each game, no matter how big or how small. They were all important parts of his team.
Doug is now coaching his youngest son's T-Ball team and assisting for his soccer team this spring.
You cannot find a more terrific guy than Doug Nunn. He is active in the community and was recently named our Fitness Center Resident of the month
