Custodian Job Description

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:  Under direction of the Service Director/Engineer; performs a variety of skilled and unskilled tasks in the custodian care and maintenance of community buildings.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Sweep, vacuum, mop, dust, shampoo, steam clean, strip, wax polish and buff floors, carpet and furniture.

 

Empty garbage and recycling bins and reline bins with liners.

 

Clean and sanitize restrooms and replenish supplies; clean spills, drinking fountains, mirrors, tables, walls, fixtures, blinds, etc.

 

Wash windows, walls, metal and woodworks.

 

Inspect and maintain assigned custodial equipment and small tools for proper operating condition.

 

Open and close, lock and unlock facilities as needed.

 

Clear and clean sidewalks to maintain safe pedestrian traffic at buildings during snow events.

 

Be able to work independently of other positions, including nights, early mornings or weekends, as necessary.

 

Track and prepare requisition for supplies needed for operations of the buildings.

 

Perform minor maintenance (i.e. change light bulbs, minor furniture, fixture, or equipment repair, etc.)

 

Maintains Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)

 

Keep records of work completed.

 

Recommend and oversee operations requiring outside contractors.

 

And other duties as necessary to provide for the operation of the Department and other building operations.

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICAITONS

 

Education, training and/or experience which indicates the skills, knowledge and abilities to perform daily custodial job functions. 

 

Minimum requirement of a high school diploma or equivalent and 21 years of age.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

 

Working knowledge of equipment, supplies and materials used in building maintenance and cleaning of facilities.

 

Skill in operation of necessary tools and equipment to properly perform duties.

 

Ability to work independently and complete daily activities according to work schedule.

 

Ability to use equipment properly and safely.

 

Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.

 

Ability to establish effective working relationships.

 

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

 

Floor buffers, steam cleaners, carpet cleaners, vacuum, mop broom, dusting equipment, small tools (i.e. hammer, drill, screwdrivers, etc.)

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Ability to reach with arms and hands.

 

Ability to perform the physical aspects of the job such as climbing ladders, carrying items up to 50 pounds, moving items more than 75 pounds, standing for extended periods of time, etc.

 

Ability to walk, stand, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl in performance of the duties.
